In case you are bound to join college or university ad you didn’t know, there will be a time when you will be required to write a thesis. Wondering what this is? Some refer to it as dissertation but this is what defines a thesis. It is a document which is submitted to an institution of higher learning in partial fulfillment for the award of an academic degree. It contains the research findings of the author who carried the actual research, gathered information and data, made an analysis of the same data and information to arrive at a conclusion. A thesis follows a predefined thesis format which is often an instruction given by the professor or any supervisor who is in charge of your paper. Let’s explore one thesis paper format because there happens to be several others.
The APA Thesis Paper Format
As earlier mentioned, while you are writing your thesis, you will be required to follow a given format. This format is what guides you as you make citations for the references that you will be using in your paper. The most common happens to be the American Psychological Association or rather, the APA style of thesis formatting. It is used in theses which have an inclination on social sciences.
When writing an apa thesis, there are so many things that are involved. Starting from the cover page, acknowledgement, abstract through to the conclusion, you should write as per what this formatting style requires you to write. Be it a thesis proposal format or any other paper that you are writing in APA, it must have four main sections.
Main Sections of Your Thesis
Your paper must include
- The title page
- The abstract
- The main body
- Reference list
1. The title page
While writing your title page, you should ensure that you have included a running head, title of your thesis, author’s name (you name in full) as well as the name of your institution. When writing a running head, it should be at the upper left hand corner of the page. This comes in all pages including the title page.
2. The Abstract
This is a brief summary which comes right after the title page. The APA style of formatting demands that this paragraph should not exceed 250 words on the highest and should not under run the minimum of 150 words. However, this falls squarely on the discretion of your instructor and also, the specific publication. The instructor will provide you with guidance on what to do with your abstract.
3. The Main Body
To make it more understandable, this part is the actual essay of your research. You happen to be writing a report where your main body will be broken down into topics and subtopics. This report should include the following:
- The discussion
This means that you will have to give a clear analysis of everything that you have done in this part of the whole thesis.
4. Reference List
This is a part in your thesis that gives the list of all the sources that you have used in your thesis paper. It follows a given format of writing in APA. This list is written in on a new page, at the back of the whole document.
Citation in APA
When doing the in-text citation in APA format, you should start with the author’s name followed by the date of publication. The full information about this source should be included in your reference list. For instance, if you were to in-text cite a book by Freud published din 1900, it should be like this (Freud, 1900). The extended information pertaining to this book will be included in the works cited page.
Rules pertaining to reference pages in APA
- All references should be written on their own page. The title, ‘Reference’ should be centered at the top of the page.
- Every entry that you make should follow the alphabetical order.
- Flush the first reference line with the left margin. Note that each additional line should be indented using the tab key on your computer keyboard.
- The most remarkable rule here is that the text should be double-spaced, unlike in earlier APA versions which required one to only single space. This is a revised version.
- The reference list should not be double spaced.
- Of you have in-text referenced a source; ensure that it is in the reference list. Same cases, if you have included a source in the reference list, ensure that it is in-text referenced within the main body. This is mandatory for every citation you make.
- All titles for journals, books, magazines and newspapers should all appear in italics.
