An ally in society

An ally is defined as any member of a dominant group in society who works tirelessly to abolish any type of injustice and prejudice, thereby gaining freedom and happiness. Ally acts in this manner by accepting personal responsibility for bringing about necessary societal reforms (Rothenberg & Mayhew, 2016). Allies attempt to disrupt oppressive tendencies, allowing individuals of society to recognize their hidden privileges and happiness. They also empower individuals of society who have been attacked by oppressors.

Oppression and the role of allies

Oppression is a prolonged unjust control and treatment that benefits the dominant groups in the society and at the same time disadvantages the minority. Oppression is a broad term that is framed by racism, sexism, and heterosexism (Rothenberg & Mayhew, 2016). Allies are individuals who stand firm to eliminate these forms of oppression in society. An ally is well described as an agent of change.

The role of allies in advocating for change

Being that an ally belongs to the dominant group, one campaign for change by taking the role of talking to other members of the dominant group about their behavior. An ally confronts fellow dominant individuals and makes them realize the value of peaceful coexistence. In the course of African American's struggle with racism, in the recent times, White groups have emerged as anti-racial activists that are committed to teach the white majority to uphold the value of equality and cultural diversity (Rothenberg & Mayhew, 2016). Giving to the fact that the allies form part of the dominant group, they possess some social power and privileges and hence have the authority to confront those who encourage violence from the dominant group. Violence is linked to oppression. Violence is caused by differences in ideologies and fight against different social groups.

Providing positive role models

Another role of an ally is to provide a positive role model. The behaviors of allies are always aimed at bringing change and eliminating oppression from society. Allies behave in such ways that give young people the desire to be positive about equality, change, and well-being.

Working towards social change

Social change begins with acceptance of an evil deed and then followed by the decision to embrace the good deeds. Allies work to make people realize the effects of oppression and therefore emphasize the benefits of freedom and peaceful coexistence (Rothenberg & Kelly, 2016). Anti-racist white activists are an example of African American allies advocating for equality. Allies work so hard to mobilize society, government, and other groups to embrace tolerance, eliminate oppression, and discrimination in society.

The Black Lives Matter Movement

The Black community in the US and parts of Europe is a group that has experienced injustice that includes a recent increase in extrajudicial killings by police. In 2012, George Zimmerman who murdered Trayvon was acquired in a case that involved racially motivated extrajudicial killing. A movement called Black Lives Matter emerged to spread the message of justice, equity, and accountability of law enforcement agencies. The Black community has experienced racial segregation, but even after the reconstruction period in the US, institutional discrimination placed Blacks as second-class citizens. A number of young African Americans have wrongfully been arrested, incarcerated, and some literally shot dead by police after surrendering. Such incidences are attributed to racial tension and stereotypes that African Americans are criminals and their lives do not matter. In that respect, the Black Lives Matter Movement sought to become an ally and initiate awareness to facilitate social change that seeks to boost racial tolerance, gender, and economic equity around the world.
