Challenges Faced By Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People

The word "transgender" refers to people who have undergone medical procedures to alter their gender. Non-conforming people, on the other hand, do not behave according to their gender class (Reisner et al, 2014). Because of their differences, those people face many obstacles. Job discrimination is one of the most common issues that such workers face. Nearly half of transgender and gender-nonconforming people have been fired, threatened at work, or are being refused promotion and employment.

According to Reisner et al., the bulk of transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals do not have care insurance (2014). This aspect makes medical transition for transgender persons impossible (Reisner et al., 2014). About 19% of transgender and gender non-conforming persons have been denied housing and almost 11% evicted from their homes. They consequently turn to cheap places or even bunk with friends or family. People of color who are Trans or gender non-conforming persons even face worse challenges.

Guidelines Set by National LGBT Health Education Center

National LGBT health education center works in various ways to minimize the challenges faced by transgender and gender non-conforming persons (Reisner et al., 2014). It provides educational forums, resources and health consultation to transgender and gender non-conforming persons. Provision of mental health care for such people is a major activity which has been done to support them. They are encouraged through guidance and counseling on how to live with their conditions and on steps to overcome their challenges.

Health care centers addressing transgender and gender non-conforming people specific issues, are being created (Reisner et al, 2014). At such special places, their needs are taken care of without any discrimination. Organizations and associations of transgender and gender non-conforming persons are being launched, where by such people come together to solve the problems commonly affecting them. Though such forums transgender and gender non-conforming persons learn how to handle challenges and assume normal life.
