The Importance of Voluntary Programs for College Students

The article of Dave Eggers is a great read that highlights the challenges that come with too much spare time and so little to do whilst in campus. In San Francisco, most of the students in campus spend a lot of their time taking part in extracurricular activities like enjoying basketball while others master the art of cheerleading. The creator feels that the time in college should be lessened to three years since there is so tons time wasted in the process. The importance of enrolling students in community provider programs is also highlighted as a way of ensuring that college students leave these institutions when they are well-equipped with the skills needed to face the outside world.

Serve or Fail: The Need for Community Service

The article titled Serve or Fail by Dave Eggers highlights the importance of having college students in voluntary programs while still on campus. Most of the time, the final weeks in campus are the best for many students who give themselves an enjoyable break. According to Eggers, the students will either "be on a beach, on a road trip, in their rooms, or painting their toe nails with a Q-tip shoe polish". The author is concerned about the amount of time wasted in the process and wonders if the students really deserve this time off. The aim of this paper is to give insight on the need to engage college students in community service as part of the learning process so as to prepare them fully for the needs of the outside world. The period in college is awfully long and even when one has course work load and part time jobs; they still have so much time left to spare. A student may start an act of service but quit along the way due because of the lack of motivation. However, if the university makes service compulsory, they students will be pushed to continue serving even when their place of service feels strange. A service requirement is best suited for college students because they tend to be ephemeral and generally have substantial demands from their work and family. Colleges can give students credit for service to inspire them to go for for service and in return they will get credits equivalent to one period in class. The service can also be restricted to junior years when the students have a lot of time and flexible schedules.
