The Ballad of Birmingham

The ballad is a poetic form that began as a folk tale set to music. Its three and four-stress lines follow a regulated rhyme scheme, and the poem is divided into eight stanzas. The story is based on the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. It tells the story of a young girl who aspires to be a part of the freedom march. As folk poetry, "Ballad of Birmingham" exemplifies the stories and sentiments of ordinary people. It also brings the horrors of racism to the forefront, accelerating the national conversation.

A young girl in Birmingham asks her mother to let her participate in the Birmingham Freedom March, but she objects. Instead, she sends her to church, which she considers a safe place for young people. However, the young girl's life is taken in a violent act of racism.

The story is an important part of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) led the Birmingham Campaign to bring attention to the racial discrimination in Birmingham. It was exacerbated by police commissioner Bull Connor.

"Ballad of Birmingham" was published in 1965 by the Broadside Press. Dudley Randall, the founder of the Broadside Press, wanted to make this poem more widely accessible to the public before it could be set to music. Randall also sought to make "Ballad of Birmingham" a part of the Black arts movement.

This poem is a powerful example of how community bonds are reinforced by tragedy. The poem builds toward the events in stanza seven. Although Randall does not explicitly mention the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing, the event portrayed in this poem is a powerful metaphor for the tragedy of racism.

Many civil rights marches began at the 16th Street Baptist Church, which was a prominent religious center for Birmingham's black population.
