The Definition of Interpersonal Communication

The definition entails the exchanging of knowledge between two parties, which may be on opposite ends of the transmission. Interpersonal contact may occur as a result of prior arrangements or by chance, such as meeting along a street and catching up with a friend. The aim is to achieve self-actualization, collective interests, or make new relationships. The paper delves into two basic concepts of interpersonal communication: how obstacles or threats will disrupt good processes and how to solve them.

The First Rule of Interpersonal Contact

The first rule is that interpersonal contact cannot be avoided (Bevan & Sole, 2014). The inevitable nature makes it hard for someone not to pass any information even in the form of a greeting. Even facial expressions can be a form of this communication. Therefore, people tend to have a perception of someone, and they relate to them in that foam hence the transmission element cannot be avoided in a society of social beings.

The Second Principle: Irreversibility

The second principle is about the concept being irreversible (Bevan & Sole, 2014). One cannot take back the words or gestures directed at someone else back. Once a person says something, the words will always have a lasting impact on that individual unless they forget. The sender of the message, therefore, cannot reverse it once the information reaches the receiver.

Challenges in Interpersonal Communication

Interpersonal communication faces a lot of challenges such as misperceptions, long distance relationships, and intergenerational interaction (Bevan & Sole, 2014). On the other hand, barriers such as noise and unrelated messages can also interrupt communications. The barriers or challenges can disrupt a communication through hindering the nature of the message reaching the receiver in the right way. Such hindrances, especially in the medical field, can result in medical errors that can lead to a loss of life.

Overcoming Challenges in Interpersonal Communication

Overcoming the challenges requires that one studies the nature and evolution of interpersonal communication to understand the nature of maintaining the proper relationship with others (Bevan & Sole, 2014). Also, the process can help in understanding self and the relationship with others. As a result, communication between the two individuals can significantly overcome most of the challenges.
