Leadership/supervisory strategies are some of the key qualities that all leaders, regardless of their area of operation, should have. The strategies of leadership or supervisory offer result in a thriving community by influencing, inspiring, and coordinating individuals who participate in working and achieving the mission and target framework (MacDonald & Scott, 2000). Concerning leadership strategies, the aim of this paper is to investigate the leadership/supervisory techniques used in a film to achieve results in a viable and productive manner. Therefore, the movie I selected to review the techniques of supervisory/leadership is Gladiator which was directed by Scott and got released in the year 2000. The techniques of supervisory/leadership in the movie Gladiator can get portrayed as follows:
B. Supervisory Techniques Used in the Movie
After watching the movie "Gladiator" by Dreamworks & Universal Pictures, I started understand that different leadership/supervisory strategies exist and they are utilized by leaders of different categories. Maximus Meridius who happened to be then General and Commander fpr the Roman armed force of Northern Legions. He made use of the strategies of supervisory to successful defeat the German warriors (MacDonald & Scott, 2000). Along these lines, the basic leadership/supervisory procedures which can be mainly be seen in the first scene of the movies which has an average length of five minutes are motivational leadership, strategic leadership, and treating others people with the respect they deserve. The three supervisory/leadership techniques form the basis of the Roman Army's success which get depicted as follows:
Motivational technique: One of the methods of supervisory that is evident is the motivational technique that was utilized by the leader in the movie in motivating the troopers who had made progress some time back and the objectives which are yet to be handled with an anticipated last battle achievement (Harkins, 2006). For instance, within the initial scenes of the movie, Maximus is seen mainly conveying some kind of motivational pitch to his rangers/military troop moments prior to the start of the attack saying that it was possible for them to improve their way of living after the war given that it was to be the last battle in their life.
Strategic Technique: The leader, Maximus, additionally applied the strategic method in the skills he applied in supervising to handle the warriors. The Roman Legions can get perceived as an army that was simple, be that as it may, the disposition of the strategy used in the fight makes it successful as a final victory against Germanic tribes who ended a long war on the Roman outskirts (Harkins, 2006). For example, within the initial scenes of the movie, Maximus made use of some elements of traits of the armed forces and capacities and latter attacked the susceptibilities of the force which was opposing by consistently maintaining communication with the armed force.
Respect: Maximus used the technique of supervising of respect for others in the movie, and these is evident in the initial first five minutes. In the scene, Maximus established an atmosphere of respect that is mutual between the Roman Army's warriors (Harkins, 2006). It mostly began by Maximus actually appreciating the role his men played to be successful in the wars. For instance, in the movie's scenes characterized by battles, Maximus is seen giving respect even to the warrior who was least paid in the armed force.
C. Application of Supervisory Techniques
I. Supervisory Techniques that were effective: From the movie's selected techniques of supervisory, motivational and strategic techniques were both best strategies of supervising based on the grounds that both developed an atmosphere of a platform likely to win in the support of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Additionally, these techniques which Maximus utilized were likewise successful in the movie given that they both made others to perceive them as leaders.
II. Non-effective Supervisory Technique: In the movie, respecting others or the technique of mutual respect did not turn out to be effective as expected. This is because after they won the battle, Maximus failed to get the respect he deserved from others, only Emperor Marcus Aurelius gave the respect. Additionally, the technique failed to be effective given that Commodus, who was the son and was supposed to inherit the power had no much respect to Maximus, he further killed his father.
III. Role I could play as a Scene Supervisor: One of the most important scenes of the movie is where there is the discussion that was between Emperor Marcus and General Maximus regarding the rule of Rome subsequent to deciding to retire (Adeniyi, 2007). Here, the emperor left Maximus to take responsibility in leadership to assist in protecting Rome from corruption since his son and heir of power, Commodus, was not fit to lead over Rome. Nonetheless, Maximus denied the proposal and settles to retire at his Spanish farm home at the command of the Emperor. For the scene, I suggest that the decision made by Maximus was not best to make.
Therefore, if I were at the position of Maximus, I would show respect as a supervisor in view of the issue of corruption within Rome which requires being completed. Also, as a supervisor in the wake of welcoming the proposal, I could have also left the people of Rome free from becoming slaves.
IV. Results of High Stress Environment on Supervisory Techniques: For an environment characterized by high stress, for example, war or emergency room, the technique for supervising negatively affects the environment through restraining the thinking ability of the leaders when contrasted with peacetime. An environment with high stress likewise rules the leaders' capacity, and thus, the possibility of making choices that are wrong can be realized towards goals if compared with a situation that has less stress (Adeniyi, 2007). Also, the technique of supervising in the vast majority of the stress condition can be compared to peacetime get diverted from the right way, and thus a leader can lose the battle.
V. Supervisory Trait that I relate to: Among the most effective supervisory traits which are related to my way of living are respect for others and acknowledging efforts made by other people. It is so because it develops an atmosphere characterized with efficiency and improvement certainty. The respect for others supervisory attribute is my living experience of times when I give respect to other people, for instance, young and elderly individuals. Also, recognizing and acknowledging other people in my daily living acquaints me with formally accepted circumstances and at the same giving various benefits to other persons.
VI. Why Supervisors using Textbook Technique fail: The strategy of using textbook is settled for by supervisors drawing reference from previously known contexts. Be that as it may, with time the practical situation of a majority of the issues seems to particularly evolve over time. In this way, the evolving circumstances require different supervisory techniques which do not exist in the textbooks. As a result of these, in most cases, supervisors are likely to fail if they utilize the textbook techniques (Adeniyi, 2007). In my personal life experience, I do not attempt to deal with adverse circumstance with the help of the textbook techniques given that it lacks solutions; the external environment presents me with different support in such scenarios.
