The second amendment reinforces and protects the right of the US citizens to keep and bear arms. The legal framework, which was established in 1791, reinforces the freedoms of the individual to legally own a gun. It is a reflection of the commitment that the US had to the protection of the rights of its people. Those pitted against the second amendment contend that increased control by the government and the curtailment of the right provides a means through which increased gun violence can be mitigated. Still, the proponents of the second amendment propose several arguments to reinforce the protection and upholding of the Second Amendment. This paper argues for the retention of the Second Amendment.

The second amendment thus promotes the right of the people to protect themselves against the impositions of gun violence. Additionally, victimization is significantly curtailed when individuals are allowed the opportunity to own guns and use them when they are provoked. The reduction in crime in states that protect the Second Amendment stem from the fact that criminals and bullies are deterred by the knowledge that their potential victims have a means of defending themselves. Thus, criminals are not deterred by the legal ramifications of their actions but rather the knowledge that the potential victims may retaliate if and when they institute an attack against them.

The ratio of the police to the citizens does not fully address the safety needs of the citizens. There is therefore a need for the empowerment of the citizens to facilitate their safety in the absence of adequate security agents to oversee the task. The negation of the Second Amendment provides an intervention that would inhibit the safety of the citizens in America. According to Lund (2014), criminals are less likely to impede the safety of individuals who have guns at their disposal and are empowered by the Second Amendment. Additionally, the right to self-defense is tacitly enshrined in the constitution. The Second Amendment is therefore aimed at protecting the safety of American families against all external threats. It should therefore be reinforced rather than castigated.

As a result of increased gun violence in recent times, many individuals have committed themselves to the negation of the Second Amendment in the US. The legal framework protects the rights of the Americans to own a gun and use it to protect themselves against the impositions of the state and criminal units. Some of the factors that validate the promotion of the Second Amendment include the reduction of crime as a result of the legal premise, improved safety of the citizens and the improved control of tyranny by the citizens.
