Immigration and Development in the United States

Immigration has been a common activity in the United States over a long period of time. People have settled in their cities and brought with them new ideas and developments. Immigrants have come in to do what the original inhabitants were not thinking of even doing. These articles are meant to show us how immigration has helped some parts of America develop after several downfalls, particularly, those businesses that boom because of immigrants in America.

The Transformation of Toytown

The article discusses new inhabitants of the United States and how they modified the already wrecked cities into useful towns (Kotkin 4). There was no existing toy town as per Charlie Woo, who is considered the father of the toytown that turned into a global city. Previously, toytown as a district was dead with no activities. As immigrants came in, they took the initiative to re-invent the town into a more lucrative one. The toytown became a source of employment to many inhabitants and also attracted many people as it became a toy center for many wholesalers and retailers over the time. Also, the district was able to control the movement of toys to retailers in America.

Miami: A Reborn Global City

The town is known for its global activities, whereby it has absorbed customers all over the states, including from Latin America and Mexico. According to Charlie Woo, the town was once dead and was not available. He saw it as a place that was well centered to provide a nice selling place for toys. The benefits are immense such as; it brought about the growth of other activities that were related to the business, for example, the growth of the business in Southern California.

Swoons over Miami-Christina Larson

The article talks about the crime that occurred in the districts across the United States that destroyed existing businesses. According to Sassen, in her first publication, ‘The Global City’, she saw the need to bring back the fallen cities because the people that were in charge of doing so were reluctant and taking no initiative to bring them back. They were silent; nobody was talking about re-invention of the towns. She saw the desire of making the towns global cities.

Rebuilding From the Ground Up

From the discussions held, it was clear that a city could not become a global city. The former old cities are the ones that were able to cross the bar and become global cities, for example, the case of Miami (Sassen 6). Thus, it is known for its affordability in terms of livelihood, growth of infrastructure, and the development of real estates by the Cubans who inhabited the town from their homeland. They made good use of available resources in Miami and started from a ground zero.

Globalization and Immigration

The articles above have the themes of globalization and immigration. We have seen how immigrants that moved into the United States utilized ideas of the dead cities and brought them back to life as global businesses. The idea of Charlie Woo who started a family business dealing with toys managed to have his business at the top. The businesses attracted outside entrepreneurs globally. His business managed to create job opportunities for a large population and rebuild of dead cities. The same case with cities hit by war such as Miami, was brought back to business by immigrants, which made it a global city up to date and demonstrated how businesses can become global.

Recommendations

From the articles, I can recommend the importance of taking up an opportunity from something that seems dead and re-inventing it to make it important again. New ideas can be gotten from something destroyed. When something bad happens to an existing business, the idea is to look at it at another angle to bring it back; not leaving it to die.

Conclusion

From the articles above, we have seen how immigration has been of great benefit in the United States. The immigrants came in and uplifted the dead towns and transformed them into important towns. These were ideas that the original inhabitants were not considering doing them. We have also seen how globalization has risen in cities like Miami. How the developed from small towns to global cities.
