The Artists and Challenges of Censorship

The artists face many challenges as a result of the censorship of art, as seen and understood from different literary works. Censorship of art frequently comes from the government, religious leaders, activists, and protesters. This is due to the fact that members of the current society exercise their rights to free speech, association, and expression, and as a result, they use art to the best of their ability to express their emotions and thoughts as well as to voice social grievances.

Art as a Commentary on Society

As can be inferred from reading Alice Walker's "Am I Blue," art is by its very nature a commentary on and a source of contemplation on society. The implication is that the artist was able to make observations on the nature occurrences and mirror the people's actions, various beliefs, and social norms. "Am I Blue", therefore, was the artists way of expressing the immoralities observed when it came to the way in which animals are perceived and treated in the society. The fact that she was aware of the art censorship in view of the ability to either offend or result into polarization among the members of the society, decided to seek audience against the intolerable human actions against animals by being empathetic.

Expressing Plight through Art

Concisely, she achieves her plight to the society against animal misuse by using a horse to exemplify the difficulties and awkward experiences that animals in the society undergo. In her observations, she succinctly expressed her opinions and feelings through art that animals just like human beings disserve better care and treatment. In comparison, she highlighted that animals too feel lonely and hurt when not given attention and care. Hence, it is high time that people valued animals in the society as well as treated them with equal dignity, respect, and integrity.
