The fact that some authors face persecution, incarceration, torture, and even murder because they choose to write the truth prevents some from exercising this right. The website Pen American Center fights for the rights of these authors. This essay will look at the sacrifices made by Oleg Sentsov and Narges Mohammadi for the liberties of writers.

My interest in Narges Mohammadi was piqued by her sentence following her battles for human rights.

Narges Mohammadi promoted human rights reforms and defended political prisoners in court as the previous vice-president and spokesperson of Defenders for Human Rights Center (DHRC). Similarly, Oleg Sentsov was sentenced to 20 years in prison after terrorism charges. He criticized Russia's annexation of the Crimea and the shortcomings of the judicial system.

Themes

Overarching themes are those that dominate the stories. They include human rights violation and oppression. In both stories, the writers fight for human rights despite their predicaments in the fight. Narges represented political prisoners, while Oleg criticized the shortcomings of the judicial system. Another central theme is oppression. Both writers undergo persecution, especially through imprisonment for criticizing the government in their writing careers. Although the reasons are different, the theme of oppression is very conspicuous in their lives.

Ways of Advocating for Freedom

Advocating for the freedom of writers is critical for the development of the literary world without fear. Firstly, writers need be familiar with the organizations which fight for rights of writers, journalists, and poets. Secondly, writers need to unite and fight for the freedom of speech of those writers in regions without the freedom. Freedom of speech enables the writers to express themselves. Lastly, writers should form more organizations that fight for the freedom of artists to nurture the young writers and mentor them. As a professional writer, I am capable of giving back to the literary world by fighting for the freedom of my fellow writers and supporting the future writers into the world of literature.

Impact of my Actions

I hope that my actions influence my family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances in general positively by inspiring them to join the fight against deprivation of the freedom of speech. More so, my actions should motivate them to follow their dreams in the literary world and eliminate fears of imprisonment and intimidation as the case with Narges Mohammadi and Oleg Sentsov.
