A Critique of the Tempest by William Shakespeare: A Review of the Magic of Christopher the Plumber (Prospero)

Introduction

            The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare. This paper focuses particularly on the review of the magic of Christopher the plumber. The design, actions and stating of choices made by Christopher the plumber shall form the premise of the thesis statement for this paper. Further, it is of the essence to note that, other areas of concern in the play to be discussed in this paper will include: play’s main information, play’s premise of production and uniqueness of the play’s production. Lastly, this paper will concern itself with the researcher’s opinion about various aspects of the play.

Discussion

            Christopher the Plumber assumes the character of Prospero in the play. Here, Prospero plays the role of a god who is able to perform non-evil magic. He uses the same magic to scare off his enemies in the event that they have aimed to attack him. For instance, at some point when he saw his enemies on a ship moving close to his current location, he scares them by causing a storm. Additionally, Prospero displays the virtue of intelligence in his leadership style. He never intends to hurt his enemies. Instead, he uses intelligent antics to scare them.

            Moreover, Prospero displays another aspect of his leadership style. He is despotic when dealing with Ferdinand. On the contrary, he displays a humane character when even when dealing with those he claims to be his conspirators. The human character is displayed when he perceives Antonio as a traitor but does not treat him as one. Another aspect of his humane character is displayed when he stops Alonzo from seeking an apology from his own daughter, Amanda. Lastly, it is of the essence to note that all the aforementioned characters of Prospero display him as an individual who values justice and fairness.

            It is evident that the play is all about leadership and its application when dealing with humanity. This is depicted when Prospero displays his unique lead character to deal with different situations as they occur. Consequently, the unique aspect of the play is the combination of different incidences of Prospero’s interaction with people to form his leadership character of being just, fair and humane. Additionally, the white magic used by Prospero depicts genuineness in terms of Prospero defending himself. He only uses the magic to his protection when necessary. This depicts that he does not abuse his power to perform magic. Lastly, this play is unique in its display of the theme of conflict resolution throughout the play with Prospero as the key initiator of resolving conflicts.

            In my opinion, I would suggest that despite conflict resolution being one of the major themes that are being conveyed in the play, the conflicts in each context should not just be easily resolved. For this theme to come out successfully there should be some tough stand by characters which after a good period of time gradually tones done while resolving the conflict in context. Such a dimension enriches the plot of the play and flow of content. It also helps in placing emphasis on the characters’ role in the play.

Conclusion

            The Tempest is a play set in the context of demonstration of the human contemporary society. It strives to bring out the concept of socialization and impacts of the same. It can, therefore, be conclusively reported that the Tempest is an educative play in all aspects of human societal interactions.
