Heavy Equipment Technician

Heavy Equipment Technician is the profession I'm interested in. As a Heavy Equipment Technician, it is my responsibility to maintain and fix heavy machinery and vehicles used in the farming, construction, military, or transportation sectors. I am also skilled at troubleshooting issues specific to my field. As a journeyman mechanic already, I intend to continue in this field. I want to work my way up to shop superintendent, then foreman or advisor.

I plan to enroll in a metallurgy course soon, after which I'll spend more time in the welding shop honing my practical abilities. This will make me more skilled and efficient with different types of welding which include but not limited to Mig, Big, and Stick. The future of my career is highly dependent on how well I achieve these short term goals. Focusing my dream towards achieving this is highly dependent on the skills I gain over the short term. With that, I also intend to spend some extra time using torches and plasma cutters. This will guide me to become a more rounded mechanic and eventually a Shop Technical Supervisor. I then plan on achieving this goal over the next 2 months, dedicating 4 hours a week working towards archiving this goal. I believe with such a time dedicated for the next two months or so, I should have learnt a lot more than what I have written here with the diversity of the profession I am engaging myself through.

My Long term goal is to write and receive my Heavy Equipment Red Seal. This is the theoretical challenge for my job. I have already purchased and availed myself with all the materials needed for the study and with this I will be completing this over the next year. For me, that will be by far a milestone achieved, I can only focus on the horizon thereafter. By this time next year I will be writing my exam. My methods of study will involve reviewing the chapters while creating my own notes, completing the question bank at the end of every chapter and creating my own study package. I will review everything starting no less than 3 weeks away from when I have to write the exam.

My study will start in the March time frame and I will be spending 6 - 8 hours a week working towards achieving this goal. This time dedication can only sound unreal, but yes, that is my dream with a purpose to achieve without which we are only animals. I only believe I can set my goals then exceed them. My future aspirations are to become a skilled shop supervisor and then later on a Shop foreman or advisor. This will be the brim of my career, at least for now. I should have acquired the art of Physical Strength and Stamina and attention to detail of heavy equipment repair. Over time, I should have attained mechanical skills too with complex machinery and engines coupled with the tools to fix them. It is important over this same time frame to acquire technical skills as well. The electronics field is a catch for that matter with the ability to comprehend blueprints with the possibility of offering advisement on troubleshooting equipment repairs should not go unnoticed. Over this time, I will then comfortably sit back and say I have started to see my dream come to reality.
