Gender Roles in Politics

Gender roles in politics have long been a source of concern in both democratic and authoritarian countries around the world.

Gender discrimination in politics occurs along gender lines as well as through presumptions about political allegiances.

Nonetheless, as gender norms in politics have changed, many women have entered political positions and participated in many types of elective positions.

The Modern View on Gender Roles

With Hillary Clinton running for president in 2016, there was a broader exhibition of a modern view on gender roles in both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Besides, there has been an increase in the number of women running for different political posts at state and local levels and as Jennifer Granholm, former Michigan Governor puts it, the decisions that individuals make to run for public offices do not depend on one's "plumbing."

Gender Issues in Politics

According to Lucey (2016), women in politics such as Clinton have changed tried to heavily stress issues that appeal to women as well as families such as healthcare, education, child care, pay equality and family leave among others.

Such objectives show the existing gender roles in politics.

The political reasons for engaging in politics are clearer in different genders than before, two-career marriages in the campaigns are in line with the rise in women in the workforce (Lucey, 2016).

Women have also tried to change the view of the society in regards to gender roles in politics and dismiss the fact that they are just flower girls in public offices.

As such, they engage in serious matters of national importance such as policy change, lobbying, and human rights protections.

Stereotypical Attacks on Women in Politics

Despite the changing gender roles in politics, women still experience stereotypical attacks from some members of their societies.
