During my work experience at Entumo electrical corporation, I got a firsthand look at what it was like to have studied electrical and computer technology at university. The functional portion of the course was provided by Entumo Electrical Corporation. My philosophy and logical reasoning were all put to the test here. Installation and management of electrical power, communications, illumination, and control systems in plants, companies, schools, and homes is all included in the job summary. This meant doing more hands-on work at the firm rather than academic work. After being introduced to everyone, I was handed a tender to work on, in which they had asked me for recommendations to improve certain aspects of the project wherever I see fit, as well as my opinions on the project as an entirety. They were very open and happy for me to contribute as much as I wanted to, and were open to any suggestions and ideas. This instantly made me feel comfortable and definitely made me feel as though I was part of the team.

During the first week of work I accompanied a senior electrician to a job that involved installing electrical systems in a newly constructed building. He explained to me that this was less complicated as compared to maintaining equipment in existing buildings. This was because electrical wiring was more accessible during construction unlike in maintaining established buildings where you had to identify the problems and replace broken equipment that was at times difficult to reach.

That first week all we had to do was a lot of maintenance work that included fixing or replacing parts, control systems, motors and other equipment. All that work basically involved use of hand tools that I had previously read about or used in the practical laboratory back at the university. It was challenging more than it seemed in theory but by observing and learning from the senior technician, I managed to pick up tips and learned different types of skills, such as easier ways of system installation without breaking any equipment.

During the other weeks I was taught how to read blueprints of buildings which were technical diagrams of electrical systems that showed the location of circuits, switches, outlets and other equipment. It was quite fascinating but challenging because I did not know which tools to use to achieve each stated goal. A manual was handed to me by senior electrician that showed me which tool was to be used where and for what purpose. I must say being in the field was quite informative than I had previously thought.

I found that the workplace itself was relatively diverse from what I had observed working at Entumo Company. There are surveyors, project supervisors/managers to Electrical and Electronic engineers all working in the one office. These large ranges of people have different strengths and qualifications and they work together and organize their work in sync with

One another so that work flows and they are able to complete their work. This in turn, manages to help the workplace become better as team and therefore creates a good atmosphere in the working environment.

Many electricians work as independent contractors but sometimes collaborate with others. For example experienced electricians may work with building engineers and architects to help design electrical systems for new construction. Some may consult with other construction specialists such as elevator installers, heating and air conditioning workers to help install or maintain electrical and power systems. At larger companies electricians work as part of a larger crew they may direct apprentices to complete jobs.

Working on projects for the first few weeks was enjoyable for me as it did make me use all the techniques I learned at University in every stream of Electrical and Electronic Engineering that had been taught to us. I realized this might not be the same everywhere and usually Electrical and Electronic Engineers might focus on one type of stream, but I was happy that I had the opportunity to use all of my theoretical knowledge and applied them to real life situations.

I also realized that most electricians did not go through university like me they preferred starting out by attending technical schools that offered programs related to circuitry, safety practices and basic electrical information. Upon graduation they were would either receive a credit, distinction, pass or fail. With this they would later be able to reach the next level of education in the Universities. They were also required to continually taking education courses that were related to the changes in the electrical world.

Overall, my work experience at Entumo Company was positive. I was very happy with the amount of things that I have learned and experienced in the 12 weeks of being a Student Engineer with the company. I believe that Victoria University should keep this aspect of the

Engineering course as it does provide students with the experience needed in order to find a job later on (even if the experience is over a short amount of time).

Also, it can be very beneficial as it could lead to a more permanent position, which is what happened with me. I ended up learning a lot more than I thought I would be able to in the time span, and my hard work paid off as they offered me a job at the end of it. I am so happy, and proud that I have completed my course, and I can now graduate and call myself a Graduate Electrical Engineer.
