The Centurion Described by Polybius

The centurion described by Polybius on the Roman army was in charge of his army's acts and was to be accompanied with the soldiers on guard to be questioned face-to-face. Together with that who made the rounds, they were to appeal to the testimony to get proof of the wrongdoing before being sentenced to be bastinadoed if found guilty. As such they never neglected their duties, were brave, and performed their night duties with the most exact care and diligence. Consequently, in comparison to the Spartan in my view, the centurions had a better grasp of their battlefield because of the fear of the punishment, which made them more alert. Therefore, for a modern American soldier, such diligence and bravery would be essential qualities that they can develop in the performance of their duties.

Julius Caesar and His Relationship with His Army and Friends

Julius Caesar had an excellent personal relationship and connection with his army and friends that welcomed him back after fleeing and being held captive. Furthermore, he shared with his captives' exercises and sports without being concerned. Also, Caesar had good communication skills and was able to rescue himself from the captives by conveying correct messages and engaged with them in bold speeches. He was also well informed and understood his perspective. Hence Caesar fled when he was considered to be "just a boy", but when he had the power, he captured his enemies with surprise. Moreover, he sailed to study to become a better political orator to cultivate his talents, and always maximized his survival potential and ensured his success as a leader.

An Essential Quality for an American President: Considering Oneself a Statesman

One of Julius Caesar's qualities that in my view an American President should possess is that of considering himself to be first a statesman rather than a commander. By doing this, the President will seek to serve the people first and promote statesmanship in this country.
