Operating system (OS) and Windows and Linux Operating Systems Key Features and Problems

According to Tanenbaum (2014), an operating system (OS) is software on the hard drive of a computer or electronic device that allows the computer hardware to link and interact with the computer software. The machine is rendered worthless without the operating system. Among the several operating systems utilized by various businesses, this essay will focus on the key benefits and issues with Windows and Linux.

Microsoft's Windows operating system is owned and operated by the company (Tanenbaum 2014). It has a lot of features. First and foremost, its speed is outstanding. It raises the prospect of speedier boot times and greater desktop responsiveness. It is also compatible with a wide range of programs. As a result, a computer can continue to run indefinitely. For instance, Windows 7 has enhanced search tools, making research quick and easy. Moreover, it features the taskbar menu with icons larger and items grouped neatly for visibility and accessibility.

Common Problem with windows OS includes non-compatibility with older programs. For example, Windows 7 poses problems with some programs. At times windows OS indicates slow performance on some hardware. However, this can be easily fixed as suggested by Tanenbaum (2014). Also, graphics card may not support Aero if not updated in some windows.

Linux is another free and open source OS which manages the hardware. Its features include application support which runs windows application if necessary. Further, it has modified keyboards with a variety of languages. Tanenbaum (2014) confirms that it can support national keyboards. Also, it has live USB which users can try OS without installing it on the system. Linux comprises a graphical user interface with package that if installed makes the whole OS graphics windows as cited by Tanenbaum (2014).

The problem with Linux is that it does not support some software. However, Tanenbaum (2014) enumerates other alternatives like Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop which are all acceptable. It is hard to master Linux due to its numerous package managers displaying different commands.

To summarize, different operating systems are offered by companies, but Tanenbaum (2014) says that users prove their preference and taste. Considering the main features some will be excited by one OS in preference to the other. One may choose windows over the Linux and still operate the computer comfortably.
