ABSTRACT

The Tron is a movie that pioneered in the field of animation movies. It was an idealistic idea at its inception conceived out of video games. We try to establish its impact at that time in relation to the present and the future. In this paper we examine how the ‘Tron’ a film acted and produced many years ago will impact on the present history, cultural setup, social impact and the political context in the world. The paper examines the interconnection between the process of making the ‘Tron’ movie, that is, the inception of the idea with the message intended, the process of making and selling the movie in relation to the present.

Introduction

‘Tron’ is a movie inspired by an idea that originated from video games. The idea propelled the writer to create the movie to try and pass the technique that will be suitable for bringing video games and computer visuals to the screen (Lamble, 2011). The film was to help open this idea to the world for everyone. The film is widely an animated film with bold art. It acts as a base the animation innovation base (Springer, 2010). It was pointing out to the direction where the computer era will lead in the future. Keeping in mind that many people at that time were not conversant with where the computer innovation was leading. Will the paper examine the impact of the movie to the world and the question of will the world buy the idea or give it a wide birth?

Immediately the Film is released Hollywood which at that time in history was a leading world film company refuses to give it airplay. This was because the movie suggested that computer could take the role of filmmaking in the future (King, 2017). To them, this was in line with protection of their interest in filmmaking. This shows how they were willing to retain the status quo of the culture of movie production as opposed to change. Disney Film Company which at that time in history was a small company buys the idea and air the film. It is recorded that the film was among the most watched at that time even after being ignored by big companies. We draw a lesson here of how the world tends to fear change or innovation as they view it as a threat to their survival or income. This might not be necessarily true as we find that yes indeed computers today are playing a great role in filmmaking especially to enhance quality. Computers have not replaced but work in complementary with the people involved in the film industry.

Disney also receives credit for believing and airing the movie probably could they not have done it the idea could just have been dead on arrival. Disney Company went against the norm for something which no any other company was willing to risk at that time (kallay, 2011). Disney indeed was crucial in connecting the history in relation to the future happenings. The same way you will find few companies today are willing to support invention and innovation that is happening especially with the youths today. We still need to ask ourselves how many innovations disappear in the world today for lack of support.

The makers of the movie driven by passion and desire to pass their message to the world gave their all to see the movie actualize. We are told of the sacrifices they made from finances, time and even thinking outside the box just to see the movie comes into a reality. The lesson we draw here is despite the handles with passion and desire to achieve one will always go the extra mile to see a dream actualize. For the filmmakers, their desire and passion are what comes first not money. This is a valuable lesson to many that passion should always be the driving force money to follow later. It is documented of how the movie underwent criticism since this probably was the first time the animated movie was being acted. They still were determined, and nothing could deter them since the driving force was passion and desire. Challenges will always be there in life but the way we are persistent and patient matters in line with the outcome of our desire and passion for achieving.

The film as it was doing well despite the criticism and even secured a place at the Times and the Newsweek magazines. What followed was something that unexpected. The Times and the Newsweek gave it a wide berth at the last minute giving priority for some political event. The occurrence surely points out how the media regards politics importance at the expense of another thing. The other factor could be maybe a political story could be more selling and appealing as the magazine cover compared to the film. Also, it could have been a manipulation to prevent the idea from spreading. What remains to be answered is the media free, what story do they priorities and for what purpose or motive do they do it and the social responsibility it carries to its audience.

Years later we find the ‘Tron’ attracting a lot of interest as we find that it laid the base for animation (Ryan & Thon, 2014). The field of animation today has employed many people. Animation advertisements are also increasingly becoming popular and a constant appearance in our media today. All this trace their origin to an idea sparked through a movie many years ago.

A change of tune also is being witnessed as companies and media are rushing to get an interview with the creators of the movie. Indeed this open eyes of how the media at time celebrate success which it was not part of the making for their benefit. Lisberger is invited to many places one of them being the University of Illinois. Upon his arrival, he gets encouraged by the testimonies obtained from the student who drives their inspiration from the idea of this movie. The students who are studying computer animation and some software engineering narrate their story in connection with the film. Indeed change is a gradual process, and one should not give up as the fruits might not be realized immediately but with time.

The valuable lessons we draw from the movie is that indeed the world tends to prefer the status quo as opposed to change. Fear of the unknown is what sometimes times stand in the line of innovation and technological advancement. The film shows that in contrast to the fears it has laid a solid foundation of the field of animation advancement. The film is a good example of the revolution of an opposed idea to a greater contributor and transformer of the computer animation and software engineering era. What remains to be asked is how many ideas have died as a result of status quo.
