The Omnivore Issue

The omnivore issue occurs when people have access to a wide variety of foods but lack information on how to choose wisely when ingesting those foods. By heavily depending on ads, expert opinion, regulatory diet pyramids, and diet manuals rather than on our senses to inform our consumption decisions, Pollan claims that eating has become more complicated. People have been compelled by the predicament to turn to ideologies and popular notions (Pollan, 2006). As a result, people have enabled the industries to influence their diets in a similar way as omnivores have permitted or allowed the delight of variety and neophobia to influence their gourmet choices. Food industries have been given much trust than owns’ instincts thus determining the food diet in the globe. Likewise, as people can eat what they want, the dilemma increases as relying heavily on the industries can have much impacts and implication to our diets. In the same context, these implications creates omnivore dilemma, which people must face in life. Our health now is depended on the industries choices affecting the global trends like the dependence on oil (Pollan, 2006). For instance, Pollan gives an example of corn that makes thirteen out of the thirty-seven constituents of Chicken Nuggets. Therefore, the industry went on selling their byproducts making people fatter and fatter every day.

Dominance of Industries

Individuals no longer control the meals that they consume as most of the foods they buy as industries determine the ingredients in each of the product (Pollan, 2006). Furthermore, due to omnivore’s dilemma, people have given more trust to industries as currently, farmers are using organic chemical such as pesticides on their farms without thinking of the side effects of the chemicals. Hence, industries have become dominant in determining and shaping the type of diet that we consume.
