How significant is right to vote?

The Importance of the Right to Vote

The right to vote is very important in a democracy. The citizen's vote reveals what kind of democracy the public prefers. The right to vote and choose one's government is a fundamental right of all people of every democracy. Voting is a symbol of freedom, dignity, and representation. If citizens are denied the freedom to vote, they will become defiant, endangering the country's economy and stability.

The Significance of Voting in a Democracy

The right to vote takes us very close to the perfect definition of democracy. If we have the right to vote, we have the kind of government we would want to govern us. Whenever we want to raise voice against or for something and want to be heard, our chosen government would listen to us. The voting system provides us with a consistent form of government, and the government is not chosen haphazardly (Ali 82). If we do not vote, we don't have the right to complain, so it explains how the right to vote is significant in a country.

The History of Discriminatory Laws in America

I was surprised on how the bearer of Human rights, America deprived people of their rights and promoted racism in the past by sanctioning discriminatory laws. Now America has amended its laws and has given rights to the people and especially black people, but still, some percentage of discrimination exists because of America's history of implementing discriminatory laws. The government had given rights to the white Americans only and deprived women, black people, servants and poor native Americans of the basic rights. These laws promoted discrimination among the country which still can be seen in American. History explains that people of America apparently lived in a cage with no liberty and freedom of speech.

Injustices Faced by Black People and Women

Black people were held in slavery which is equal to disrespecting human kind. People from Africa were treated like animals and worked more than their capacity as labours which was unfair to them. On the other hand, women were equally treated badly. They gave birth to children, continued to perform daily chores and were the victim of white male's oppression and they were not treated equally (Rothenberg 473).

Struggle for Rights and Overcoming Discrimination

They were not given right to terminate their pregnancy until 1980, and that law didn't allow poor women to terminate their pregnancy. It is the right of women to terminate her pregnancy if she is not able to carry a child but that right was taken away from her too. After the death of husband, women used to perform his duties as well which was again a burden, and they were overworked, but it was not considered wrong as they were oppressed which was inhumane. Women equality in America is still an illusion.

The Barriers Faced by Chinese and the Struggle for Rights

The judges of America labelled Chinese as "The race whom nature has marked inferior." In my opinion, judges or any human being has no right to label a race or a nation inferior. The country faces barriers to success by implementing laws of discrimination. The struggle to gain rights in America showed how people suffered through while the discriminatory laws were implemented and how it affected the people living in America. Gays and lesbians were not given right to live together until recent years taking the basic right away from the people. We would not have America of today if people did not struggle back then. We would have been living in the same country with no rights if people in the past had not struggled for their themselves.
