People face problems every day in various operations as they interact with others or try to make ends meet in life. When one is depressed, it is easy to lose sight of the importance of living life. Self-esteem refers to people's perceptions of their own abilities and self-respect. High self-esteem refers to a person's ability to believe in himself or herself in a given situation and to hope for the best. Life is full of ups and downs, but people should not despair because there is light at the end of the tunnel; all that is required is persistence and courage. Different situation in life make them depressed hence have low self-esteem, but people should overlook them and hope for the best (Mruk, 2006).

Self-esteem is believed in oneself abilities in making life better than its current state. To live in peace and harmony with others in the society, a person should have high self-esteem to enable him to make a better decision through critical thinking. In the most occasion, people always have low self-esteem, and this can be evident in the talks and their behaviors. An indicator of low self-esteem includes focusing on the wrong one has made instead of the accomplishments, being critical of oneself, comparing oneself with other people, having negative self-talk and finding it hard to accept compliments from other people.

Causes of Low Self-Esteem

There are many causes of self-self among people nowadays. Loneliness among people may make them lack confidence in themselves and feel unwanted by others. Bullying and poor performance at school may make the students depressed and feel frustrated with their lives. Neglect of people and abuse especially the young and the old may make them have low self-esteem thus feel tired with life as no person takes care of them and value them. Being in a situation where you're the odd one out such as a place with professionals in a particular field you're not conversant may make one have low self-esteem.

Steps in Increasing One's Self-Esteem

Self-esteem plays a crucial role in the life of the people and all times they should yearn to improve it to have better lives. In order to do this, there are some steps which include;

Think about yourself positively in all situations you encounter and see yourself as the best in anything you undertake.

Never compare yourself to others as people have different capabilities. We are all talented in different ways, and one should always see themselves as the best.

Never work had to be perfect but always give whatever activity you're doing your best and you will succeed.

Allow yourself to make a mistake and never be too harsh on yourself as mistakes are a guideline to success in future. One should learn from his or her mistake and move on in life.

It is essential for a person to focus on the things he/she can do with ease to avoid straining and stress which eventually leads to depression.

One should be able to celebrate their achievements regardless of how small they may seem to be to others. Through celebration, this one can make more achievements in life.

The people one associates or surrounds himself with determining his confidence level. One should be near people who support him and get him to feel the best in whatever he does.
