The author uses the technique of trickery to illustrate morality by using disguises in the role of a woman as a trickster. In two widespread ways, women use deceit, that is, Devasmita to shield her husband and the nun in her attempts to manipulate Devasmita to betray her husband. The trickster characteristic empowers the women who use it unlike in ordinary language where it bears a negative connotation. For example, the merchants disguise provided her with the ability to save her husband from the four merchant’s sons who would have made efforts to harm him since due to what they tried to do.
The characters appear as imperfect because of the concept being an animal, similar to that of Machiavelli's The Prince. The two women, the nun and Devasmita try to adopt the concept by being both lion and fox. The concept implies that for one to make it through the struggles, then one ought to be an aggressive lion and a cunning, sly fox simultaneously. The concept of the lion and the fox is evident when the nun makes an effort to assist the merchant’s sons, yet her real intentions are to trick Devasmita like a fox. Afterward, by allowing the merchant’s sons to rape Devasmita, she is a lion.
