The Psychological Effects of Hospitalization

The psychological effects of any member of a family's hospitalization should be carefully considered. The management of psychological disorders that occur as a result of hospitalization is critical for effective pediatric care and any treatment provided to anyone who is hospitalized. As a result, the purpose of this article is to determine the impact of a child's hospitalization on three different persons. These people include the child, the family, and the child and their family together. Hospitalization can result from chronic illnesses such as cancer and genetic abnormalities, or from severe injuries sustained in an accident.

Effects on the Child

Fear is the initial effect on a child. The child starts to worry about their health and the pain that they are experiencing. This fear later manifests in worry for the family's wellbeing. A child can develop coping mechanisms such uncontrollable crying, sucking on the thumb and even bed wetting. Another impact is resentment and a feeling of rejection. They get angry that they cannot go home with their parents and sometimes feel like they are being rejected (Maureen E. Clark, 2015).

Effects on the Family

Looking at the family's perspective, hospitalization of a child may lead to financial strain so as to cope with the medical expenses. Fear also creeps onto the family since they are uncertain of the condition of the patient and if and when they may recover. Due to the frustration caused by the entire ordeal, many families especially parents begin to have domestic strife which in some cases may lead to divorce or separation (Maureen E. Clark, 2015). Such incidents lead to further harm to the family environment especially to other siblings. They may experience feelings of rejection, anger, and withdrawal from the family since they feel ignored and uncared for. It is thus important for families to seek help during such stressful times. It is of even greater importance for the caregivers to know what to do for such families.
