The Difficulties Facing Third-World Nations

The difficulties facing third-world nations are numerous. These issues include low living standards that force the populace to live on a shoestring budget and a dearth of emergency response teams equipped to handle major catastrophes, among others. It's the same in Nepal, where I was born. Life is difficult because the majority of the populace is unemployed. People use every means at their disposal to support themselves. Regarding my family, my father ran a modest shop that provided the family with food. In my whole childhood, I endeavored to ensure that the harsh conditions do not hinder me from achieving academic success that will help me improve the living standards of my family. Therefore, I made is my vow to work hard and reach my destiny.

The Devastating Earthquake in Nepal

In April 2015, the world woke up to the devastating news of a terrible earthquake in Nepal. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8, a magnitude of its kind in a period of almost a century. The country was on its knees after the death of 9,000 people. Apart from the deceased, the country had to contend with 22,000 individuals who were injured. To me, this was something I had only seen in horror movies. The business that my family depended on was destroyed by the earthquake. Humanitarian help from organizations all over the world offered a helping hand to my country, but the country was still bleeding. As for me, it was a time to be the provider in the family while ensuring that I attain the highest grades possible in my studies. Truly, challenges bring out the hidden potential in people.

Balancing Work and Education as an Immigrant

The destruction of the shop indicated that the primary source of income in the family was nonexistent. Therefore, I looked for a job which would provide for my family and me. Being an immigrant in the United States presented many challenges. Firstly, there was the language barrier. Back at home, we used Nepali as our official language. Eliminating the barrier meant that I learn English with the least amount of time possible and ensure fluency. Secondly, Secondly, the culture in the country was different from ours not to mention my lack professional skills. I did not have the freedom to choose the job I wanted. My needs were pressing. The job I got was in a convenient store. I had to work for 60 hours in a week at the warehouse to earn enough money to support myself and my family. At the same time, I attended a 14 credit hour a semester class.

Overcoming Challenges for Academic Success

Balancing between the two was very challenging. Having to work for a whole day meant that I had to sacrifice my sleep and work at night. It was difficult for me because I slept less than the recommended duration of six hours. I found motivation from the belief that one day I will look back and appreciate the sacrifices I made. The units in Associate Mathematics were very challenging. I knew I had to invest more time in the subject. I could not bear the thought of failing in the unit despite the tremendous sacrifices I was making as well as the goals I hoped to achieve. It was impossible for me to establish a social life. My life was confined to my room, class and the convenient store where I worked. My needs dictated how I spent my time. The end of semester exams came, and I prepared for the worst while expecting the best.

Achieving Success and Appreciating Challenges

The results were beyond my expectations. I got a 4.00 GPA in Associate Mathematics. It was a successful conclusion an era that marked the most challenging time in my life. At the same time, my family is living well while trying to look for another source of income to supplement the help that I offer. Looking back at the events, I realized that I had the ability to prevent the things happening in my life from impacting my life negatively. The earthquake and the loss of family revenue motivated me to go an extra mile and realize the potential within me. I am not sure I could have achieved the same grades at the comfort of my room with financial assistance from my family. The challenges also hastened the speed with which I overcame the cultural and language barrier.

Embracing Diversity and Pursuing Goals

Currently, I can express myself comfortably in English. Besides, the challenges gave me an opportunity to appreciate the cultural diversity in the country and fit into the population comfortably. The earthquake destroyed our family business bringing along financial hardships in the family. The cultural differences, as well as the language barrier, limited my employment opportunities, and I was confined to working 60 hours in a week. However, a combination of all these challenges did not hinder me from being among the top ten students to graduate with a perfect GPA. On the contrary, the problems opened my mind to the perception that my abilities are only limited by the diversity of my imagination. The memories give me the zeal to work harder for the ultimate achievement of my goals.
