“There comes a period in every man's education when he comes to the conviction that jealousy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must accept himself, for better or for worse, as his portion,” Emerson writes. 1. formal introductory phrase He means to suggest that any man comes to a point in his life where he wants to be original and strive to come up with new ideas that are special to him and demonstrate how he differs from others. At this point, little else matters but his desire to do something special, which allows him to stand against all odds and face all obstacles, whether they succeed or not. In this view therefore, a man can never be complete without discovering self and freedom for oneself shall always linger. At this moment, we not only want to achieve but we want to achieve something unique for ourselves that shall make us stand as heroes in many generations to come. The course of course towards such and achievement is never expected to be smooth but capable of leading to death. The author wants to show the importance of standing up to the call of task, when action is required and as an intellectual with wide knowledge on many things, you need to stand for something unique.

Application Paragraph

Emerson argument on the time when a man must take action that calls for their intervention serves to answer to the question why Josh and Randy sneak through a gap to have love with their loved ones. “So imagine that is you, you are a healthy young dude who has been self-practicing all those months, and you wake from that dream of a hot chick giving you a melting kiss…What would you do?” Randy wonders. But he never let the night mare to just dominate over him all through but took a courageous step to sneak through the hole come whatever may. “…Well, you would do what I did, you would slip through, and when Carolyn un-Velcroed that Velcro wearing her blue Guess kimono, whispering, Oh my God, I thought you'd never ask, that would be the most romantic thing you had ever underwent.” To Randy, his decision to sneak and make love to Carolyn, gave him an experience he had never got in his entire life. Emerson would argue that though the pursuit of challenging situations and braving the danger, we are bound to enjoy the fruits of our courage.

Evaluation Paragraph

Emerson says “Who so would be a man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind” (4). Non conformist is a person who stands out of the crowd and does something unique others would not do due to influence of the crowd. The call for immortality requires men not to evade reality and act of goodwill so that they be remembered for many years to come. Moreover, when Carolyn chooses her way and decides to quit the training facility her non-conformity is seen. Emerson would describe Carolyn as courageous and decisive. “Then they took her away, or she took them away rather, because she was so far in front they had to like run to keep up as she clomped loudly away in her Kenneth Cole boots, which by the way they did not let her keep those, because that night, selecting my pajamas, I found them back in the Group Closet” Again, man is cautioned against failing to do what’s right since they want to protect the common take of a group that is propagating wrong deeds. Application Paragraph

The question of why Randy at first declined to move out with Carolyn and why at last he quit the training can be argued by Emerson both as acts of non conformist. When he declined the request by Carolyn to move out, it was because he felt it wrong to defy the rules of the training and at the same time not liking to just ride on the idea of another person while his contribution to the plan were not listened to. He wanted to be sure of what it would be like to take such a move. When he is later exposed to the natural beauty of the outside world, Randy has been convinced that the outside nears so much beauty and natural love for Carolyn and therefore he must never confirm again. Although he is helped by Slippen to quit the training, he had to take his time to be sure of what the world outside held for him. At the same time, he never needed any further convictions tied up with lies about his origin and mother seeking his submission. Time had come when enough was enough and he just had to quit the facility. Thus, while at the helm of decision making, we need to allow ourselves to be carried by our own individual thoughts and reason and not be swayed about by others thoughts and decisions. This is associated with weaknesses and may pound one into problems that were not supposed to be. Through this application, we see the need for appreciating self decision making instincts and following them so that we don’t just follow others and find ourselves in problems.

Evaluation Paragraph

Emerson says “The objection to conforming to usages that have become dead to you is that it scatters your force. It loses your time and blurs the impression of your character. If you maintain a dead church, contribute to a dead Bible-society, vote with a great party either for the government or against it, spread your table like base housekeepers, — under all these screens I have difficulty to detect the precise man you are” (5). The author passes the message that people need be on the alert as to not to blindly follow groupings, parties, laws, or religions that are no longer relevant. He says that doing this only leads to time wastage which could be saved to do better things. Further, blindly following a non-visionary group that is has a bad will and is caused by the society shall make you bear the burden of a tarnished image and blackmail when their plans backfire. He adds that it becomes impossible to separate you from the crowd and making you a common mongrel. Emerson shows that wants to assert to the importance of being upright in character and standing out against what is evil in the society as for this not only depicts them as true men but also as people of integrity.

Application Paragraph

Emerson allusion that calls for objection to conforming to dead usages, dead church or dead Bible society can be used to answer the question as to why Slippen confessed to Randy and made him leave after showing the beauty of the outside. Randy remembers how one of the trainers Slippen came to his place at night “after that night in my Privacy Tarp I was weakened by someone crawling in, and, hitting my Abercrombie & Fitch night-light, I saw it was Slippen”…Randy, I am so sorry for my part in all of this, he whispered. I just want to say you are…” Emerson interpretation would be that Slippen had seen how much harm their system was doing too well able young men wanting them to be released. He confirms to Randy that he is a great kid. By showing him to the beauty outside and to Carolyn, he wanted to make sure that his desire to leave was most triggered to a point of no surrender. When even Randy barely knows anything about exit paper work, Slippen has already prepared them on his behalf helping him to move out with courage and stay with the love of his life. Slippen would be argued by Emerson as having seen the harm they were doing and witnessed the several acts of callousness and a kingdom coming to an end thereby disassociating himself with it. Through this application, we see the need for all to always stand out at the right time against evil in society and programs that only serve egos of few while bringing the destruction of many others in the society.
