Assisting Children with Reading

There are many methods that parents can assist their children with reading, according to the text. By providing a comfortable setting for the child to study in after school, parents can help their children by helping them pronounce some of the more challenging words they come across while working on their assignments. In order to improve the child's listening skills, the parent can also recite a story to them and then quiz them on it. Fostering a culture of daily reading for your child and the rest of the family, particularly the parent, demonstrates a favorable view of reading to your developing child. Another approach is encouraging your child to read more books from the library and the internet thus potentially broadening the child's knowledge, vocabulary and perspective of different things in society.

Assisting with Mathematics

In mathematics, parents can ask the child to do word problems or answer questions that require counting, another way is by getting a picture from newspaper or article and have the child explain it to you. Additionally, through asking the child to share with you an interesting or favorite topic they learned in the math class can also assist in improving their mastering and mathematics skills. Encouraging the child to ask questions from them, relatives and friends. The parents should create time and be present when their child is doing his or her homework to enable them to identify if their child understood the topic as well as their strengths and weaknesses (National PTA, 2013).

Understanding Common Core Standards

Parents can better assist their children in understanding common core standards through demanding details on daily discussions and asking them what they believe in and try to find out the basis of their beliefs. The parent can ask questions which require details and ensure that the child acquires knowledge through reading texts which are factual. Additionally, consistently reading with the child can help in recognizing the child's instructional reading levels as well as basing on teachers' reports. Penultimately, the parent can familiarize themselves with their child's reading time and providing print material which is topic-specific to improve your child's vocabulary. Last but not least, this can be done by asking the child mathematical questions in relations to the daily life and routine and focusing on how the child handles the problem rather than the mistakes made (Common Core and Special Education: What Families Need to Know, 2015).

Views on Scholars with Disabilities

The study on common core standards and special education has changed my views about scholars with disabilities. I have learned that they are equal and most of them are sharp. Special care and incorporating them in various activities tends to prove their talents and abilities. Prior to my knowledge of scholars with disabilities, this topic has challenged my views on their capability and demonstrated that they do not require favors to accomplish their dreams. It is more evident that indeed physical disability is not inability. Parents who support their children with a disability tend to impact positively in their lives since they grow up with high self-confidence, self-esteem, self-determination and high goals thus competing favorably with other scholars.
