Parenting is an necessary aspect of life as it helps to mould a child to the person he or she becomes. Successful parenting is now not an easy task as it includes controlling many aspects of life. Parents, therefore, play a vital phase in the life of their children. It is the role of the dad and mom to support children in each step they take, in all aspects of life, through letting the teenagers aware that they have their support. There are three styles of parenting which encompass authoritative, authoritarian and permissive. Different styles of parenting are demonstrated via how different parents cope with their children in various situations. To recognize the styles of parenting movies or films can be used to provide practical explanations.

Authoritarian Style

A film entitled Brave demonstrates this style of parenting more profoundly. In the film, a mother, Queen Elinor tries to make her daughter a more responsible person however through the use of force. The authoritarian style of parenting, therefore, involves a demanding parent who does not provide room for feedback from the child (Smetana, 2017). Due to the high expectations by the parents who use this style of parenting, punishment is usually the way to go if their expectations are not met. Corporal punishment and yelling are some ways used to discipline in this style. However such style of parenting has negative impacts on the child as some children tend to become very aggressive away from home (Smetana, 2017). The children become shy due to low self-esteem, regard obedience and success highly and end up conforming to gangs.

Authoritative Style

Authoritative style of parenting is best demonstrated in the Cosby TV show. In the show, Dr. Huxtable tries to guide his son to be a goal oriented person in life. Authoritative style of parenting is argumentatively the best style of parenting since unlike authoritarian the parents give room for a response from the child (Smetana, 2017). The expectations of parents who adopt this style of parenting include independence, maturity, and cooperation from the children. The aftermath of the style is that the children become independent, can express themselves adequately, are understanding and have fewer teen problems (Smetana, 2017).

Permissive Style

Permissive style of parenting is well demonstrated in the movie Mean Girls where the mother states that the girls could do whatever they want. Parents who adopt this style do not expect any level of maturity from the children hence end up becoming friendlier than normal parents. The parents demand less and do little to control the behavior of their children (Smetana, 2017). Permissive style of parenting leads to lack of discipline, egocentrism and poor social skills (June, 2013).

Part B: Effective Communication

Effective communication can be described as when the sender and receiver get the meaning of message being relayed through listening carefully and make the sender feel understood by providing the necessary response. In a parent-child relationship, effective communication is therefore where the child listens to the parent, responds where necessary and vice-versa (Hook & Vass, 2014). Parents can use effective communication to interact with their children so that they can know their progress in school and life in general. Where there is effective communication, problems will also be addressed properly when they arise. Effective communication can also be used to help parents know when there is a change of behavior in their children and correct them where necessary (Hook & Vass, 2014). Communicating effectively is therefore paramount in establishing long lasting relationships with your son or daughter. A lot of patience is necessary for a parent to understand different temperaments by the child. Such an understanding is vital as one can have the best experience with a child hence good parenting.

Part C: Scenario

From the Scenario, it is clear that the two kids are from different backgrounds. The type of consequence which fits in this situation is the logical Consequence. The logical consequence is one in which behavior has been intentionally planned (Hook & Vass, 2014).Basilo has been brought up differently compared to Salena. While Basilo believes that men can cook, to Salena it is something new, probably something she has never seen or heard. It is the different environments in which the two children are brought up that bring up this difference. It is a logical consequence since the parents of the both children have intentionally made the two believe in the different ways they do (Hook & Vass, 2014). Another reason why it is a logical consequence is that the children have been brought up with the notion that what they believe in is always right. Basilo believes that men can cook while Salena is against the idea. The unending tug-of-war shows that no one is willing to give up on their viewpoint. Finally, it can be argued that Basilo is brought up by an authoritative parent who gives room for interactions, unlike Salena.

Conclusion

Choosing the right parenting style is crucial as it determines a lot in the life of a child. Authoritative parenting is the best style since interactions between the parent and children are possible allowing the two address any challenges which might arise from either party easily. Despite the fact that the style is time-consuming it molds children to people who can address life challenges with ease. Effective communication is necessary for parenting as it helps in creating better relationships between children and their parents.
