The Merchant Tale of the Apocalypse fits the type of storytelling typical to medieval French literature known as the Apocalypse Fabliau.
According to Christina, the styles of stories are mostly short, comic, and contain someone cheating from someone else's wife. The key plot of The Merchant's Tale fits the genre, especially with the stock features of the lustful old man cuckolded by a young man. Part of the fabliau comedy of this type is the stupidity of an old man who feels he can physically satisfy a young man, a good-looking lady, and make her honest to him.

January indulges in wishful-thinking regarding a wife since he has the desire to serve, love, and to be loved. At this stage, the Merchant intervenes and says that intellectuals that include the prominent classical misogynist Theofrastus. January also boasts of his prowess that he terms as undiminished. His two brothers, as well as his friends, hold divergent opinions regarding marriage.
