The Importance of a Reflective Journal in Qualitative Research

In populating a research study

As Yin (2009) notes, specifically one for which existing theories are to be considered, the use of a deductive qualitative approach is desirable due to the fact that it helps links the study parameters to the objectives of the research. It also links the questions that guide the research effort and offers a point from which to begin analysis as Sunders et al. (2009) point out. To the extent that interviews are concerned, the transcription was done by voice recognition software though Sanders et al. (2009) suggest other strategies such as summaries and taking of personal notes. In this research effort, the use of a reflective journal has been instrumental in documenting the researcher’s experience.

Development of categories

that would be helpful in associating data was done through a data-driven method which would help reduce the amount of data collected by weeding out unnecessary information. Through such a process categories were developed from recurrent terms, as Strauss & Corbin (1998) outline, used in the research; a fact that helped realize and enhance relationships between/among phenomena and hence connect them.

Given that the current research effort involves participation of individuals, such persons have been enlightened on the scope of the research. It also takes into consideration the code of ethics prescribed by the University of Westminster in so far as both data storage and privacy of respondents is concerned. Participation in the research effort was premised on a voluntary and consensual basis after each respondent was informed of their rights, the scope of the study and the part their participation would play in such research effort.
